Protect victims, yes. Weaken sentences for violent criminals, no. Bill C-16 includes protections Conservatives support, like banning deepfake abuse and mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse material. But it also weakens mandatory prison sentences for serious crimes, including human trafficking and violent firearms offences. I challenged the minister at committee.
